Washburn sets goal to break record for The Big Event

Topeka, Kan., The Washburn Student Government Association will be hosting a community service day, called The Big Event, on Sat., April 9 that will benefit the local area and students alike.

Registration for The Big Event will begin one month before on Wed., March 9 and end one week before the event on Sat., April 2. Last year, there were between 300-400 students that signed up to volunteer. This year the goal is to increase that by 25 percent.

“One of the main goals of The Big Event is to show the community how much Washburn students really care about the people who support them,” said WSGA President Blake Porter.

Nearly 15 local businesses and churches participate and provide volunteer opportunities for students. In the past, volunteers have built playgrounds, picked up trash on the side of the highway, planted a garden, and much more. This year, there is a goal to increase that as well by at least 30 percent.

“We are proud to be among the many college campus across the country to participate in The Big Event,” said Washburn University President Jerry Farley. “The Topeka community helps Washburn students in many ways and this is just one way of giving back to them.”

On the day of The Big Event, volunteers will be assigned to a community service project. Lunch and swag, such as sunglasses, hats and water bottles will be provided. Busses will then transport each volunteer group to their destination and bring them back once finished.

The Washburn Student Government Association strives to represent and act in the interest of Washburn University students. WSGA benefits students through programs helping them expand their horizon, strengthen themselves, and get involved with the community to meet new people.
